Tombstone Tuesday - July 12, 2016 - John Overly

Tombstone Tuesday - John Overly - July 12, 2016

John Overly (Overley) was born on November 3, 1795 in Bourbon County Kentucky. He was the son of Frederick and Mary Ann (Hines) Overley. John was the oldest of seven children born to Frederick and Mary Ann; John(1795), George(1798), Polly(1801), Rebecca(1806), Susannah(1812), Mary Ann(1813), Margaret(1815). The family name changed from Overley to Overly.

John came to Ross County Ohio from Kentucky when he was eight months old. Mary Ann Carried him on horse back along with her prized spinning wheel.

John married Sarah Thorpe, the daughter of Newton Thorpe on January 31, 1822 in Ross County, Ohio. They had eight children; Mary Ann(1822), Elizabeth(1824),Eveline(1828),Frederick(Pete) (1830),George (1832), Ellen(1835), John T(1838), Sarah(1842)

John settled with his family in Hopetown, Ohio. He was a farmer his entire life. He had very little schooling due to lack of attendance, his Uncle, Martin Overly, had opened a school in the area.

In all of the Federal Census from 1850 – 1870, John and his family are found in Hopetown. In the 1870 Federal Census, John is living next to his son, John Thorpe Overly and family in Hopetown.

John died on July 1 or 12 in the year 1877. There is some confusion about the date. The stone is very old, worn and hard to read. Most family histories list his death date as the 12 of July. (which is why we are featuring him today) He is buried in the Hopetown, Cemetery in Ross County, Ohio.

Rest in Peace,
Love, Jan
