Anderson Reunion

Last Saturday we had our Anderson Reunion.  It was well attended.  We spent all afternoon fondly remembering other Anderson events that we had shared together realizing that there were many that we could recall.  I created a video so this generation of Anderson would know where and whom we came from. Everyone brought a dish to share so we had plenty of food. I had hoped for a warm fall day so we could be outside in the yard but as Michigan weather would have it... It was rainy and brisk.  The Garage is big enough to hold us so that it where we moved it to.

By late afternoon we were able to move out to they yard  for some soccer and eventually a bonfire as the sunset.  It was a great day to be an Anderson.

Tombstone Tuesday - September 22, 2015 - James H. Gerkin

James H. Gerkin

James H Gerkin was born on December 13, 1913 to Rollie Hershel Gerkin and Martha Ellen Moore in Orleans, Orange County, Indiana. He married Audrey Green on December 24, 1929 in Joilet, Illinois. They had three sons; Michael, Stephen and Gregory. He became a truck driver after trying several other occupations. He was employed for 30 years as a driver for Allied Van lines and traveling thru 48 of the 50 states. After his employment with Allied ended, he and his wife Audrey ran a restaurant and lounge called “The Topper” in Watseka, Illinois until they retired. It was after their retirement that Jim and Audrey got to visit the last two states. They went to Hawaii for their 50^th Wedding Anniversary. One winter they decided to go visit family members who happened to live in warmer climates than Illinois. They went to Florida, Texas, Arizona and on to California. By the time they reached California, Jim decided that they might as well drive to Alaska so even though it was February, they did. Jim hopped ti reach his 100^th Birthday. He died a little over three years short of it, on September 22, 2010.

Jim was a gentle man with a quick wit, a big smile and was my father-in-law. Rest in Peace!

Tombstone Tuesday - September 15, 2015 - Elsa Guttormsdatter

Elsa  Guttormsdatter was born in 1637 in Ostre Kjolo, Notteroy, Vestfold, Norway.  She married Soeren Olsen. They had  seven children;  Anne(1664), Marte (1665), Live (1667), Guttorm (1671), Soren (1674), Paul (1677), Ole (1679) . She died on September 15, 1724 at the age of 87 years old. She is buried in  Ostre Kjolo, Notteroy, Norway.

Normally I want to have a tombstone picture to go along with a death record for a Tombstone Tuesday but I do not have one today.  I will see if I can find her death record and if I do I will add it here when I find it but  I could not resist to write about Elsa today for several reasons. This weekend we had a Anderson Reunion. Else is our 6X Great Grandmother. Today, when I realize that she died on a Tombstone Tuesday date that I was trying to write a blog for, I began researching.  I started with a simple search,  "Cemeteries, Notteroy, Vestfold, Norway" and a great website appeared.  It was a Norwegian site I had not seen before. It could be new or just new to me. It appears to be a Vestfold county site. It maybe a historical society site but I have yet to figure that out but there is a lot of new data or previously undiscovered data. It is , of course,  written in Norwegian so I have to translate using google.  Everything does not always translate well but I am able to see many cousins thru the translation.  The link is  http://www.vestfold-slekt.net/notteroy/bygdebok/kjoeloe.html.

This link will surely provide me with a lot of data thru the winter months this year. My most intense research time is winter since gardening takes up so much of my summer and canning the stuff from the garden occupies my fall.

Infant son born to George and Margaret (Mygrance) Crites on January 3, 1846 in Dover , Ohio. He died on September 8, 1847 and was buried in the Fourth Street Cemetery in Dover, Tuscarawas Ohio.
