Tombstone Tuesday - October 13, 2015 - Stephen Edward Peer

Stephen Edward Peer

Stephen Edward Peer was the son of Levi and Jane (Greenless)Peer born in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario in 1853. He married Mary Elizabeth Vollick, daughter of Isaac and Libby (Lydia Jamieson) Vollick on July 12, 1879.
Stephen and Mary Elizabeth Peer had nine children; Olive(1880),  George Wellington(1882), Myrtle(1884), Herbert Lockwood(1886),  John Chester(188), Lydia Jane(1890), Pearl Adelett(1893), Leonard Lancelot(1894), and Phillip Edgar(1896).

Stephen was a member of the local Militia 44th Regiment, Welland in 1883.  Stephen Edward died on October 13, 1896 of Typhoid Fever.

I had hoped to be able to find Stephen's grave but I have not so far but I found the searching for  family information interesting this week.  I discovered that all five of the sons served for the Canadian Overseas Forces in WW1.  Leonard Lancelot joined first on September 19, 1914. He was single at the time he joined. Herbert Lockwood and George Wellington joined on the same day, on Oct 26, 1914.  They were both married at the time they joined. John Chester joined on January 12, 1915  Phillip Edgar joined on May 26, 1915.  Phillip Edgar died on August 8, 1918 in France during the conflict. He is Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion when he died near Moreuil, France.  He was buried in the Handgard French Military Cemetery.

All photos of the Peer sons were shared by family members Wyle's family on Ancestry.com. I'll look to see if I can find photos of the rest of the boy and any more information about their WW1 service.

Happy Hunting,

Jan
